The budget vetoes, themselves, hardly were inspiring. I’ve attached a chart to show just how minuscule they were in the scheme of things. I have noted to you in the past that Governor Haley’s health agency has been expanding Medicaid at a furious rate while most of her vetoes pertain to things like the Arts Commission or, this year, the Hunley Commission. I have included a chart to illustrate what I consider this minimal effort. I planned nonetheless to sustain nearly all of the vetoes (except for The Charles Lea Center and maybe another one) on the simple premise that no matter if it’s only pennies on the dollar, they still are your pennies. Each year I sustain most vetoes because they are your pennies! Most of the vetoes were overridden, and that is not surprising, but I hope that next year Governor Haley will issue some vetoes of substance instead of just for show.
